The transition from theoretical AI to practical, scientific application requires more than just access to compute; it requires foundational knowledge and structured methodology.

In March 2025, we successfully kicked off the "Deep Dive into AI" course at Chalmers University of Technology with an intensive 3-day retreat. This initiative is designed specifically to provide faculty with the opportunity to strengthen their expertise in artificial intelligence and deep learning.

Organized by the CHAIR theme AI for Scientific Data Analysis, the course was spearheaded by a collaborative team including Per Bjerkeli, Carmen Toribio Perez, Caroline Beck Adiels, Henrik Klein Moberg, and Jesús Pineda.

    Bridging Theory and Scientific Practice

The "Deep Dive into AI" course goes beyond standard machine learning tutorials. It combines rigorous theoretical foundations with hands-on workshops, equipping academic participants with the specific skills needed to:

    • Identify and formulate AI-driven research questions that align with physical realities and available data.
    • Collaborate effectively on AI projects across multidisciplinary scientific teams.
    • Build a strong foundation for continued learning, innovation, and independent model development.

A Structured Approach: The Deep Learning Crash Course

To ensure a structured and practical approach to AI education, the course syllabus directly follows the curriculum of the upcoming "Deep Learning Crash Course" textbook, which we are publishing with No Starch Press. The textbook acts as a foundational guide for moving from basic principles to robust architectural implementations.

You can learn more about the textbook and its structured approach to AI education here: Deep Learning Crash Course (No Starch Press).

We are incredibly excited about the insights and cross-disciplinary collaborations this course will foster across Chalmers University of Technology, and we look forward to seeing how these faculty members integrate AI across their respective research domains.
